Standard Operating Procedure as Organizational Discipline

Discipline is the key to success. Discipline is easy to say, but difficult to implement because it requires a high level of motivation, willingness to succeed, and ability to prioritize what is important.

Discipline, in business institution, more related to the implementation of systems, procedure and processes than the work itself. Discipline involves the setting consistent standards and implementation of these standards. With a standard operating procedure, then the consistency of quality can be maintained. So, discipline related to the establishment of standards and then implement or enforce these standards operational procedure on a consistent basis in order to achieve the expected results and progresses.

Personally discipline is associated with routine works. There are works that must be done every day in order to avoid setbacks. Because personal discipline is associated with routine jobs, sometime to be a discipline person is quite boring. Although sometimes seem boring, discipline is necessary to achieve the expected progress consistently. Through disciplined efforts, the ultimate results can be more predictable. Discipline in workplace is related to processes within the system. In order to get the expected results, standardized raw material must be used as the input. The quality of the output is very much depends on the quality of the input. The better the input the better the output will be. If the input and process are both running well, then quality final results can be assured. By paying close attention to these processes, the quality of the final results can be assured.

Although discipline is related to the routine, actually discipline can also be a creative process. Discipline can be the key to creating breakthrough when combined with the application and implementation innovative approach to process and system. To be able to combine discipline with innovation, it takes an open mind, willingness to experiment, and focus on high value activities in order to avoid loss of quality. During the experimentation, important routines must be set up as standard operating procedure to ensure the normal operation of the productive system. The process must not be susceptible to any interference. So, in this experiment, the standard daily operations remain steadily and consistently implemented.

It can be concluded that the definition of discipline refers to the set standards, consistent implementation standards, maintaining the quality processes, and improving the standard operating procedure in order to simplify the acceleration of growth. Discipline based on “standard operating procedure” will create the certainty of growth and enhance the organization’s operating system in the short term, medium term and long term. If a company is process-oriented since it was founded, then the growth process can be assured. The company that use the standardize system approach will not be subjected to degradation. Degradation within a company is often caused by the absence of standard operating procedure within the organization. Within the organisation, discipline refers to the consistent implementation of standard operating procedure that ensure quality operational system.
